Penny W. Stamps Lecture Series Poster, Fall 2006

Penny W. Stamps Distinguished Lecture Series, Fall 2006
School of Art & Design, University of Michigan
This is the last poster I design for the University of Michigan School of Art & Design. I had just graduated with my MFA and was preparing for my Fulbright year in The Netherlands. This was the fourth poster produced, in mass, by the School of A&D. The imagery in the background is an out of focus photograph of a typographic sculpture made from tape, light / shadow, acrylic and other random found objects...

In the Spring of2004, I was asked to redesign the identity for the Penny W. StampsVisiting Artist program at the University of Michigan School of Art& Design. I felt confident in proposing a design that did notrepresent the visiting artists in their entirety; in fact, it wasnearly illegible at first glance. I knew the Dean of the School of Art& Design would support the unpredictability of such a project " ithad the potential to create a buzz. From the feedback I received, bothpositive and negative, I felt like the design was a success and theresponse from members of the administration was for the most partpositive. They supported my attempt to recreate the identity of theprogram with an experimental style. Since creating this poster, I haveoften been asked to explain why the illegible is worthwhile. Liıle didI know that wrestling with this question would become the focus of mywork in the future, as I was drawn into a domain where time wasavailable for such queries to be debated.
This is the small sculpture I made to photograph and use in the printed poster.
